Primary infertility 

It is the inability of the couple to conceive after one year of trying

Secondary infertility

It is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after successfully having a baby

When to consult your doctor?

You should consult your doctor as early as possible if you are facing difficulties in conceiving. If you are above 35 yr you should consult your doctor after 6 months of failure to conceive

 

In one third of the cases the female factors are responsible for infertility, in one third of cases male factors are present and in rest the reason is unknown 

Female factor infertity can occur because of 

Ovarian factors - PCOS, Endometriosis, Previous surgeries

Tubal factors - Blockage, Hydrosalpinx, Pyosalpinx, Tuberculosis of Tubes

Uterine factors- Ashermans Syndrome, Tuberculosis, Myomas, Polyps, Uterine Anomalies

Peritoneal factors - Chronic Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometriosis

MALE FACTORS

Anejaculation

Erectile dysfunction

Retrograde ejaculation

Low sperm count

Low sperm motility

Abnormal sperm counts

Infection

Occluded vas deference

varicocele

 

INESTIGATIONS

HORMONAL TESTS - FSH ( follicle stimulating hormones), LH (luetinising hormones), Serum estrogen, Serum progesterone, AMH ( anti Mullerian hormones ). These hormonal tests gives the doctor an insight into your  ovarian function and follicular pool

ULTRASOUND - it is done to look for the presence of any ovarian cyst, to count the number of antral follicle, to check for ovulation, to look for endometrial lining, uterine fibroids, polyps, uterine septum and other malformation.

HSG (HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY)- in this the dye is pushed through the cervix in the uterus to check for the patency of the tubes and shape of uterine cavity
