A Copper T is a type of contraceptive device that has been in use for many years. It is made up of a plastic frame with copper coiled around it. It is of different types like copper T 380A, MULTILOAD.
It is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can last as long as 5-10 years. It is also used as an emergency contraception. If Copper T is being used as an emergency contraceptive, a woman needs to use it within five days or 120 hours after unprotected sex.
What causes failure of copper T?
The copper IUD might not work if
- If it accidentaly comes out-check your strings regularly , do not pull the strings
- MIGRATION -If your Copper T goes into the wrong position
- It is left in for longer than the mentioned duration, depending on the type used
Book an appointment with your Gynaecologist, you will be called after your periods are almost over. It is inserted by a trained Gynaecologist
You are given instructions that you have to follow after the insertion
You are required to regularly follow up with your doctor
How does the copper IUD work?
The copper IUD works by slowing releasing a constant dose of copper which disturbs the uterine conditions and does not allow the embryo to implant and thus prevents pregnancy
What are the Common Side Effects?
Cramping pain
Spotting
Vaginal discharge
Consult your doctor as soon as possible
If your Copper T is misplaced
You are advised to undergo an ultrasound scan / x-ray to localised Copper T and after that you are scheduled for HYSTEROSCOPIC REMOVAL OF MISPLACED COPPER -T/ MULTILOAD
